Can you bring a car seat on a plane with Southwest Airlines when traveling with a baby?

Bringing a car seat on Southwest Airlines

Yes — Southwest allows car seats on board. If you want the car seat to be used on the aircraft, you must purchase a separate seat for the child. The car seat must be FAA-approved (look for the label saying it’s certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft). Car seats may also be checked or gate-checked at no additional charge.

  • Seat required: Child must occupy the purchased seat when using a car seat (lap infants without a purchased seat cannot use a car seat on someone’s lap).
  • FAA approval: Confirm the car seat has the FAA approval label.
  • Where not allowed: Car seats cannot be used in exit rows and must fit within a single aircraft seat.
  • Installation: Secure the car seat using the airplane seat belt — aircraft do not provide LATCH anchors.
  • Gate check: You can gate-check the car seat or stroller for free if you don’t bring it onboard.
  • Arrive early, bring the car seat manual, and if you’re unsure about fit or rules, contact Southwest ahead of travel.
