Can you bring a changing pad on a plane with United Airlines when traveling with a baby?

Bringing a changing pad on a United Airlines flight

Yes — you can bring a changing pad when traveling with a baby on United. Changing pads (disposable or reusable) are considered baby/child care items and are allowed in carry-on bags or diaper bags. They can also go in checked baggage if you prefer.

Security screening: The TSA will screen the pad like other carry-on items. If it’s bulky or inflatable it may need to be placed on the X-ray belt separately or opened for inspection.

  • Pack the pad inside your diaper bag or as your personal item so it’s easy to reach.
  • If it’s large or you prefer not to carry it in-cabin, ask to gate-check strollers or larger baby gear — gate checking is commonly offered.
  • Keep diapers, wipes and any permitted liquids (breast milk, formula) accessible and be prepared to declare them at security.
  • Allow a little extra time at security when traveling with baby items.

If unsure on travel day: Ask United staff at check-in or the gate for guidance — they’re used to helping families and can advise on storage or gate-checking.
