Can you bring baby snacks on a plane with Japan Airlines when traveling with a baby?

Bringing baby snacks on Japan Airlines (JAL)

You can bring baby snacks with you when traveling with an infant on Japan Airlines. Solid and dry snacks (biscuits, puffs, crackers, cereal, fruit purée pouches that are sealed, etc.) are normally allowed in your carry-on, and these are usually the easiest to travel with. For liquids and semi-liquids such as formula, breast milk, milk, and jarred or pouch purees, security regulations that normally limit liquids to 100 ml do not apply in the same way for infant foods — you are allowed to carry reasonable quantities required for the flight, but they must be presented for screening separately at security and may be inspected by X‑ray or hand-checked.

  • Pack snacks in your carry-on or diaper bag for easy access during the flight and security checks.
  • At security: Tell the checkpoint staff you have baby food, milk, or formula. These items are screened separately and may be tested or hand-checked. Keep them easily reachable and not buried in checked luggage.
  • Quantities: Bring a reasonable amount for the duration of travel (including delays). “Reasonable” is interpreted by security staff based on flight length and number of infants; there isn’t a fixed universal number printed on your ticket.
  • Sealed pouches and jars: Keep original packaging if possible — it makes screening quicker. If you use individual portions or homemade food, place them in clear, resealable bags for inspection.
  • Breast milk and formula: These are allowed in carry-on beyond the 100 ml rule. Inform security and separate them for screening. You may bring ready-made formula or powdered formula plus water; mixing on board is usually possible if you request hot water from cabin crew.
  • Heating on board: Cabin crew can usually provide hot water to warm bottles or pouches, but services vary by flight and timing — always ask politely early. They may not be able to reheat food in microwave ovens (airlines typically use galley equipment and have limits for safety).
  • Customs and import rules: If you are traveling internationally, be aware that some countries restrict bringing in certain foods (fresh fruit, dairy, meat). These items could be confiscated on arrival, so avoid bringing restricted fresh foods into your destination.
  • Allergies and fellow passengers: Consider peanut-free or low-allergen snacks if you’ll be seated near families who may have allergies, and avoid strong-smelling foods out of courtesy.
  • Practical items: Bring disposable spoons, bibs, wipes, and a small container for leftovers or used utensils to keep things tidy during the flight.

If you want absolute certainty for a particular route or airport, contact Japan Airlines or the departure airport security ahead of time. The general rule is: yes — bring baby snacks and infant food; declare liquids/purees/formula at security and pack solids in carry-on for easy access.
