Can you bring formula on a plane with Lufthansa when traveling with a baby?

Bringing formula on a Lufthansa flight

Yes — you can bring baby formula on board when flying with Lufthansa. Air travel rules for infants allow breast milk, expressed milk, ready-to-feed formula, prepared bottles and baby food to be carried in your hand luggage even if amounts exceed the normal 100 ml liquid limit for security screening. Powdered formula is also permitted.

What to expect at security:

  • Declare the items at the security checkpoint so staff know you are carrying infant food or milk.
  • Separate screening — bottles, containers or packages of milk/formula will be screened separately from other carry-on items.
  • Additional checks such as X-ray, opening a container for inspection, or swab testing for explosive residue are possible. Security staff may ask to taste or test a small sample of liquids; this is routine and for safety screening only.
  • Quantities — bring the amount you reasonably need for the trip (including delays). There’s no strict fixed volume limit for infant food; officers allow what’s necessary for the infant’s journey.

Practical packing tips:

  • Keep formula and bottles in your carry-on so you can prepare feeds during the flight and in case checked bags are delayed.
  • Powdered formula is convenient, compact and allowed; be prepared to show packaging if asked.
  • Ready-to-feed or prepared bottles — pack in a separate, easy-to-reach compartment for screening.
  • Coolers and ice packs — frozen gel packs or ice packs used to keep milk cold are generally accepted if needed for baby food, but they should be declared and may be screened.
  • Spare supplies — bring extra formula, nipples and cleaning wipes in case of delays or missed connections.

On the aircraft:

  • Flight crew assistance — cabin crew will usually help warm bottles or provide water for mixing powdered formula when possible; if you need assistance, ask them politely.
  • Special meals — airlines sometimes offer infant meals or can warm baby food on longer routes; contact Lufthansa or manage your booking in advance if you want to request in-flight infant meals.

Customs and destination rules:

  • Personal use formula for your baby is normally allowed through customs, but some countries have restrictions on importing dairy products or large quantities. Carry only what you need and check the destination’s customs regulations if you are unsure.

If you want extra reassurance, call Lufthansa or your departure airport ahead of travel to confirm screening procedures at that airport. Traveling with a baby is common and security/airline staff are used to helping families — prepare supplies, declare them at security, and you should be able to feed your baby comfortably during the journey.
