# Calgary Airport (YYC) with Kids: Every Family Facility, Mapped

**Short answer:** Calgary International Airport has foam Fun Zone play areas both before and after security, four nursing rooms in the Domestic Terminal and free umbrella strollers past security. It does not publish a dedicated sensory room (only quiet seating areas) or a family lounge, and none of its listed nursing rooms is in the International Terminal.

**Velivolo family score:** 7/10 (Good)

YYC is one of the better-equipped airports in Canada for small children: seven foam Fun Zones split between pre-security areas and the international and U.S. gates, four nursing rooms with rocking chairs in the Domestic Terminal, family rooms beside every International Terminal restroom and free umbrella strollers past security. The gaps are a dedicated sensory room and any nursing room on the international side.

## Quick facts

- YYC lends complimentary umbrella strollers from post-security stations marked by blue bins with a stroller icon.
- Three of YYC's Fun Zones are before security, so non-travelling family can use them too.
- Every YYC nursing room has a rocking chair, a change table and a power outlet; the one by Door 1 also has a full washroom.
- U.S.-bound travellers can enter screening and U.S. customs no more than two hours before departure.
- Free Sunflower lanyards are handed out at the Domestic Arrivals information desk and at International Departures Baggage Storage & Coat Check.

## Security with children

- **Family lane:** Look for CATSA's Family and Accessible Line, where officers give extra help to anyone who needs more time. YYC says every checkpoint has dedicated accessible lanes. YYC has consolidated its checkpoints into one centralized screening area between Doors 4 and 7, and also lists Pre-Board Screening D and E.
- **Strollers and car seats:** CATSA says strollers, infant carriers and car seats must be inspected by a screening officer, children's carry-ons and diaper bags go on the belt, and a child who can walk alone should walk through the metal detector. Do not hand your child to a screening officer while you are screened.
- **Formula, milk and baby food:** For children under 2, CATSA allows baby food, milk, liquid formula, water and juice over 100 ml in carry-on. Breast milk over 100 ml is allowed with or without your child but must be shown to the officer before screening. Powdered items are limited to 350 ml in total, and gel or ice packs are fine for keeping milk cold.
- **Shoes:** CATSA publishes no shoe rule specific to children on its family travel page.
- **PreCheck:** Canada has no TSA PreCheck. YYC says its centralized screening area and Pre-Board Screening D and E have a designated queue for CATSA Verified Travellers; CATSA sets who qualifies. U.S.-bound families can enter screening and U.S. customs no more than two hours before departure.

## Getting between terminals

YYC has two terminals. The Domestic Terminal side includes the centralized security screening area between Doors 4 and 7 and post-security Concourses A, B and C. The International Terminal holds the D gates for international flights and the E gates for U.S. flights, where U.S. customs is cleared before departure. Free umbrella strollers wait at post-security stroller stations (blue bins with a stroller icon), so if you checked your own stroller you can still borrow one for the walk to the gate. YYC publishes no walking time between the two terminals.

## Layover plans

### 1 to 2 hours — Domestic departure: screen, borrow a stroller, feed near the gate

1. Clear the centralized checkpoint between Doors 4 and 7 using the Family and Accessible Line.
2. Pick up a free umbrella stroller from a blue stroller bin past security.
3. Use the nursing room in your concourse (A, B or C) before boarding.

### 3 to 5 hours — International or U.S. layover: play first, then quiet time

1. Head for the D72 or D80 Fun Zones on the international side, or E82 and E70 to E75 on the U.S. side.
2. Use the family room beside any International Terminal restroom for changes.
3. If your child needs calm, YYC lists quiet seating near the Aspire Lounge entrance at the E gates.

### U.S. connection — Connecting to the U.S.: plan around the two-hour preclearance window

1. Remember U.S. preclearance opens to you only two hours before departure, so time your move to the E gates.
2. Use the Domestic Terminal nursing rooms before you go, since none are listed on the international side.
3. Collect a free Sunflower lanyard at International Departures Baggage Storage & Coat Check if it would help.

## Your rights

- **Lactation:** We could not confirm a Canadian statute that requires airports to provide lactation rooms. YYC itself lists four nursing rooms in the Domestic Terminal, each with a rocking chair, change table and outlet.
- **Changing tables:** No Canadian statute on airport changing tables is confirmed here. YYC's own change tables are in its nursing rooms and in the family room beside each International Terminal restroom.
- **Liquids:** CATSA exempts baby food, milk, liquid formula, water and juice for children under 2 from the 100 ml limit, and breast milk over 100 ml is allowed even if your child is not travelling with you. Present all of it to the screening officer.
- **Boarding:** Priority boarding for families is set by your airline rather than by the airport, so check your carrier's policy.
- **If it is missing:** Call YYC at 1 (403) 735-1234 (toll-free 1 (877) 254-7427) or email calgaryairport@yyc.com, or ask at an information desk, such as the Domestic Arrivals desk between Doors 7 and 9.

## FAQ

### Does Calgary airport have a kids play area?

Yes, several. YYC says it has seven main Fun Zones, each with a carpet-covered foam floor and foam play structures, plus smaller play structures near the gates in each terminal. Three are before security: Domestic Arrivals by Door 3 (ages 3 to 5, with a movie area), Domestic Departures by Door 1 (ages 5 to 12) and International Arrivals by Door 16. Past security, the international side has zones by Gate D72 and near D80, and the U.S. side has zones by Gate E82 and Gates E70 to E75. They are unsupervised, so stay with your child.

### Where are the nursing rooms at YYC?

YYC's family travel page lists four, all in the Domestic Terminal. One is before security on the Departures level, inside the play area by Door 1, and also has a full washroom. Past security there is one in each concourse: Concourse A across from Flames Grill, Concourse B beside Burger Federation and the Rest & Relax area, and Concourse C near Starbucks. Each has a rocking chair, a change table and a power outlet. YYC publishes no hours, so treat them as available during terminal hours.

### Are there family restrooms at Calgary airport?

Yes. YYC's FAQ says the International Terminal has a family room with a changing table next to each restroom. Across the airport, YYC also describes large private accessible and all-gender washrooms beside the standard ones, intended for adults who need help and parents with small children. YYC does not publish a total count or a list of exact locations, so look for them next to any restroom block. If you are in the Domestic Terminal, the four nursing rooms also have change tables, which gives you a private alternative when a washroom is busy.

### Can I borrow a stroller at Calgary airport?

Yes, and it is free. YYC provides complimentary umbrella strollers at post-security stroller stations, marked by blue bins with a stroller icon. That is useful if your own stroller had to be checked at the counter. YYC does not publish how many are available or where to leave them, so ask staff near the gate if you are unsure. YYC does not run a paid rental counter, so this loan is the only airport stroller option it lists. Gate-check rules for your own stroller are set by your airline, so confirm them at check-in before you hand it over.

### Is there a family security lane at YYC?

Effectively yes. CATSA, which screens passengers in Canada, tells families to look for the Family and Accessible Line, where officers give extra help to people who need more time. YYC says every checkpoint has dedicated accessible lanes. Strollers, infant carriers and car seats are inspected by an officer, all baby food and drinks must be shown, and a child who can walk alone should walk through the metal detector. YYC has consolidated its checkpoints into one centralized screening area between Doors 4 and 7.

### Does Calgary airport have a sensory room?

Not that YYC publishes. It does list quiet spaces: before security on P2 through the tunnel between Doors 15 and 16 on the Arrivals level, after security near Gate A24, and quiet seating near the Aspire Lounge entrance for U.S.-bound travellers at the E gates. YYC also gives out free Sunflower lanyards at the Domestic Arrivals information desk and at International Departures Baggage Storage & Coat Check. The lanyard can also be used in accessible queues at security, U.S. preclearance and Canadian customs, though YYC says waits are not guaranteed.

### Can I bring formula and breast milk through security in Calgary?

Yes. For children under 2, CATSA allows baby food, milk, liquid formula, water and juice in quantities over 100 ml in carry-on. Breast milk over 100 ml is allowed whether or not your baby is with you, but it must be shown to the screening officer before screening. Powdered items like formula powder are limited to 350 ml in total, and gel or ice packs used to keep milk cold are allowed. CATSA recommends packing these items so they are easy to lift out of your bag for inspection.

### How does security work for U.S. flights from Calgary?

U.S. flights leave from the E gates in the International Terminal, and YYC says travellers flying to the U.S. can access security screening and U.S. customs no more than two hours before departure. Plan any play or feeding stops in the Domestic Terminal or pre-security areas before that window opens. Once through, two Fun Zones by Gate E82 and Gates E70 to E75 keep kids busy. If your child needs a quiet moment on the U.S. side, YYC lists quiet seating near the Aspire Lounge entrance at the E gates.

### Where can I eat with kids at YYC?

YYC does not publish kids' menus, but its family travel page uses several restaurants as landmarks for the nursing rooms, which makes them convenient: Flames Grill in Concourse A, Burger Federation in Concourse B beside the Rest & Relax area, and Starbucks in Concourse C. Eating near a nursing room means feeding, changing and a meal all happen in one short stretch. YYC does not publish high-chair or bottle-warming information for any outlet, so ask staff directly. If you need a quick meal before boarding, choose a spot in the concourse your gate is in.
