# Kahului Airport (OGG) Maui with Kids: What Families Will and Won't Find

**Short answer:** Kahului Airport on Maui has no family or unisex restrooms, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation, and its official site lists no nursing room, children's play area, sensory room, family security lane or stroller rental. One TSA checkpoint runs 5am to 11:30pm, and all gates are on the upper level.

**Velivolo family score:** 2.5/10 (Poor)

Kahului is Maui's main gateway, but it's one of the least family-equipped airports we've reviewed. The State of Hawaii says there are no family or unisex restrooms (one is planned), and its site doesn't list a nursing room, play area or sensory room. Plan accordingly: feed and change before you leave your hotel, bring a nursing cover, and allow time for agricultural inspection if you're flying to the mainland.

## Quick facts

- The State of Hawaii says Kahului Airport currently has no family or unisex restrooms, though it hopes to build one.
- Kahului Airport's official site lists no nursing room, lactation pod or children's play area.
- Kahului's TSA checkpoint is open 5am to 11:30pm daily.
- Bags bound for the US mainland go through agricultural inspection on the ground level before check-in.
- Kahului has no baggage storage, lockers or showers for long layovers.

## Security with children

- **Family lane:** Kahului publishes no family security lane. The TSA checkpoint is open 5am to 11:30pm daily, and CLEAR runs 6am to 6pm. If you're flying to the US mainland, checked bags must go through agricultural inspection on the ground level before check-in, so build in extra time. For screening help, contact TSA Cares at least 72 hours ahead.
- **Strollers and car seats:** Strollers, baby carriers and car seats go through the X-ray, and anything too large is inspected by hand. Take your child out and carry them through the walk-through metal detector.
- **Formula, milk and baby food:** Formula, breast milk and baby food are allowed over 3.4 oz (100 ml) and do not need to fit in the quart bag. Tell the officer at the start of screening and take them out of your bag.
- **Shoes:** Children 12 and under can leave their shoes, light jackets and headwear on during screening.
- **PreCheck:** Children 12 and under can use the TSA PreCheck lane with an enrolled parent or guardian. Teens 13 to 17 on the same reservation can too, if the PreCheck indicator appears on their boarding pass.

## Getting between terminals

Kahului has one two-level terminal for both mainland and inter-island flights. The ground level has the ticket lobby, agricultural inspection, check-in, security screening, baggage claim and ground transportation. The upper level, reached by escalators or elevators, has the gates, shops, a newsstand and restaurants. Visitor Information desks are staffed 7:45am to 9:45pm.

## Layover plans

### 1–2 hours — Prepare before you go upstairs

1. There is no family restroom, so change your baby before you arrive if you can.
2. Allow time for agricultural inspection on mainland flights.
3. Grab food at CPK or Burger King in the central building.

### 3–5 hours — Bring entertainment

1. There's no play area or nursing room listed.
2. Pack snacks, a nursing cover and quiet activities.
3. Sammy's Beach Bar & Grill is the sit-down option.

### Very long gap — Consider leaving the airport

1. No showers, nap rooms, lockers or baggage storage.
2. Kahului town hotels are about three miles away.
3. The checkpoint reopens at 5am.

## Your rights

- **Lactation:** Kahului is a small hub, so the FAM Act's lactation room requirement for medium and large hubs doesn't apply to it, and the airport lists no nursing room. You still have the right to breastfeed, and TSA allows breast milk and formula through security.
- **Changing tables:** Kahului has no family or unisex restrooms, according to the State of Hawaii, and doesn't publish where changing tables are.
- **Liquids:** TSA's national rule applies at Kahului Airport: formula, breast milk and baby food are allowed over 3.4 oz (100 ml) and do not need to fit in the quart bag. Declare them at the start of screening.
- **Boarding:** Family boarding is set by your airline, not by Kahului Airport. Check your carrier before you fly.
- **If it is missing:** Ask at a Visitor Information desk (7:45am to 9:45pm) or call (808) 872-3893. For screening help, contact TSA Cares at least 72 hours before you fly.

## FAQ

### Does Kahului Airport have a kids' play area?

Kahului Airport's official site doesn't list one. Its services, shop and FAQ pages cover dining, shops, visitor information and baggage carts, but no children's play area. The State doesn't say outright that none exists, so treat it as unconfirmed and plan to keep kids busy at the gate.

### Is there a nursing room at Kahului Airport?

Kahului's official site doesn't list a nursing room or lactation pod. As a small hub, the airport isn't covered by the FAM Act's requirement for a dedicated lactation space. If you need to feed, a nursing cover is your best bet, or feed before you leave for the airport. Breast milk and formula are allowed through TSA in quantities over 3.4 oz.

### Are there family restrooms at Kahului Airport?

No. The Hawaii Department of Transportation states that Kahului Airport currently has no family or unisex restrooms, though it hopes to build one. All restrooms have wide stalls and grab bars. The airport doesn't publish whether its men's and women's restrooms have changing tables.

### What time does security open at Kahului Airport?

The TSA checkpoint at Kahului is open 5am to 11:30pm daily. CLEAR runs 6am to 6pm. The State defers to each airline on how early to arrive, so check with your carrier, and allow extra time for agricultural inspection if you're flying to the US mainland.

### What is the agricultural inspection at Kahului?

Checked bags heading to the US mainland are screened by agricultural inspectors on the ground level before you check in, to stop plants and pests leaving Hawaii. It adds a step to your departure, so leave extra time with kids and luggage.

### Can I rent a stroller at Kahului Airport?

Kahului doesn't mention stroller rental. Baggage carts can be rented in baggage claim and the ticket lobby, and there are no lockers or baggage storage. Bring your own stroller and gate-check it under your airline's rules.

### Can we rest during a long layover at Kahului?

Not easily. Kahului's FAQ says there are no shower or nap facilities, and no baggage storage or lockers. Hotels in Kahului town are about three miles away. If you have a long gap between flights with kids, it may be worth leaving the airport.

### What are the rules for formula and breast milk at Kahului security?

TSA's national rules apply. Formula, breast milk and baby food are allowed in your carry-on above the 3.4 oz (100 ml) limit and don't need to fit in the quart bag. Tell the officer at the start of screening and take them out of your bag. Children 12 and under can keep their shoes on.
