## Security with children

- **Family lane:** SDF's TSA checkpoint opens about 90 minutes before the first departure and is scheduled to close at 9pm daily, so if your flight is delayed past 9pm, SDF urges passengers to be screened before then. SDF publishes no family lane. For screening help, contact TSA Cares at least 72 hours before travel.
- **Strollers and car seats:** Strollers, baby carriers and car seats go through the X-ray, and anything too large is inspected by hand. Take your child out and carry them through the walk-through metal detector.
- **Formula, milk and baby food:** Formula, breast milk, toddler drinks and baby food are allowed over 3.4 oz (100 ml) and do not need to fit in the quart bag. Tell the officer at the start of screening and take them out of your bag.
- **Shoes:** Children 12 and under can leave their shoes, light jackets and headwear on during screening. If your child goes through the body scanner, light jackets must come off and go on the X-ray belt.
- **PreCheck:** TSA sets the rules for children in the PreCheck lane, so check its site before you fly.

## Getting between terminals

SDF has one terminal. Ticketing is on the upper level and baggage claim on the lower level, and a single TSA checkpoint leads to a central rotunda with Concourses A and B. The Information Booth is in lower-level baggage claim, and charging stations with AC outlets and USB ports are on both concourses.

## Your rights

- **Lactation:** SDF is classed as a small hub in the FAA's 2025 boarding data. Since fiscal year 2023, the FAM Act's lactation-area rule (49 U.S.C. 47107(w)) covers small hubs that have held that status for three consecutive years, as well as medium and large hubs, as a condition of federal airport grants. SDF provides Mother's Rooms near Gate A3 and in baggage claim.
- **Changing tables:** SDF publishes changing stations in its Mother's Room suites but not in other restrooms.
- **Liquids:** TSA's national rule applies at SDF: formula, breast milk and baby food are allowed over 3.4 oz (100 ml) and do not need to fit in the quart bag. Declare them at the start of screening.
- **Boarding:** Family boarding is set by your airline, not by the airport. Check your carrier before you fly.
- **If it is missing:** Ask at the Information Booth in lower-level baggage claim, or call Airport Operations at (502) 380-8200. For screening help, contact TSA Cares at least 72 hours before travel.

## FAQ

### Does Louisville airport have a play area for kids?

Louisville Muhammad Ali International's official site doesn't list a children's play area, so plan on bringing a few small toys or activities for the wait. The terminal is compact, with a single checkpoint leading to a central rotunda and two concourses, which makes it easy to take a gentle walk between gates when little legs need to move. Charging stations with AC outlets and USB ports on both concourses can keep tablets topped up, and the airport offers complimentary wireless internet for downloads before you board.

### Where are the nursing rooms at SDF?

SDF has two Mother's Rooms. Past security, on Concourse A near Gate A3, there is a large shared area with counter space, a sink, a microwave, a changing station and a flight display, surrounded by three private suites with their own locking doors. Before security, a single suite sits on the Baggage Claim level next to the Women's Restroom near the center escalators. The airport says each suite has dimmable lights, a comfortable glider, a changing station and plenty of outlets with USB ports for pumps and phones.

### Are there family restrooms at Louisville airport?

Yes. SDF lists three family restrooms. Before security, one is on the Ticketing level down the hall just past Book & Bourbon Southern Kitchen, and another is in Baggage Claim next to the Men's restroom near the center escalators. Past security, the third is on Concourse A, right next to the Mother's Room near Gate A3, which makes that corner of the concourse a handy base for feeding and changing. SDF doesn't publish whether other restrooms have baby changing tables, so the Mother's Room suites are your surest bet.

### Does SDF have a sensory room?

Louisville's official site doesn't list a sensory room. SDF does take part in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program: you can pick up a free sunflower lanyard at the Airport Operations & Badging Office in the main terminal, or lift any courtesy phone that has a sunflower logo next to it. SDF asks travellers to call ahead on (502) 380-8200 so staff can prepare. The airport also supports GoodMaps, a free indoor navigation app with predictable, step-by-step routing that can reduce overwhelm. For checkpoint help, contact TSA Cares at least 72 hours before your flight.

### What time does security open and close at Louisville airport?

SDF's TSA checkpoint opens about 90 minutes before the first departure of the day and is scheduled to close at 9pm daily. If your flight is delayed past 9pm, the airport strongly encourages passengers to be screened and airside before then, because screening may not be available later. There is one checkpoint for both concourses, and SDF publishes no family lane. TSA's national rules apply: children 12 and under can keep their shoes, light jackets and headwear on, and you carry your child through the metal detector while the stroller goes through the X-ray. If your child goes through the body scanner, light jackets must come off and go on the X-ray belt.

### Can I rent a stroller at SDF?

SDF's official site doesn't mention stroller rental, so bring your own and gate-check it under your airline's rules, which are set by the carrier rather than the airport. Luggage carts are available to rent in the parking garage, at the lower-level curb and inside the terminal, which helps when you are juggling bags and children. Some airlines also offer skycap check-in on the upper-level departures roadway at busy times. Remember that vehicles at the curb must be attended at all times, so unload quickly together before parking.

### Where should we eat at Louisville airport with kids?

Past security, Chili's Bar and Grill on Concourse A offers sit-down meals from 5am until the last departure, and Smashburger and Coals Artisan Pizza on Concourse B open at 4:30am. Starbucks Evenings in the rotunda is listed from 3:30am, and Nulu Pantry, Commonwealth Market and Travel Ease have 24/7 self-service grab-and-go options. Before security, Book and Bourbon Southern Kitchen serves Louisville favorites like the Hot Brown, and KFC, Starbucks and Auntie Anne's are there too. Check the airport's dining page for current hours.

### What are the rules for formula and breast milk at SDF security?

TSA's national rules apply at Louisville. Formula, breast milk, toddler drinks and baby food, including puree pouches, are allowed in your carry-on in amounts over 3.4 oz (100 ml) and don't need to fit in your quart bag. Tell the officer at the start of screening and take them out of your bag to be screened separately. Ice packs and gel packs are allowed too, and your child doesn't need to be travelling with you for you to carry breast milk. You can ask for private screening at any time during the process.
