## Security with children

- **Family lane:** ORF lists its TSA concourse checkpoints as open 4am to 8:30pm, adjusted to demand, and publishes no family lane. Its Family Travel page suggests explaining the screening steps to children beforehand. For screening help, contact TSA Cares at least 72 hours before travel.
- **Strollers and car seats:** Strollers, baby carriers and car seats go through the X-ray, and anything too large is inspected by hand. Take your child out and carry them through the walk-through metal detector.
- **Formula, milk and baby food:** Formula, breast milk, toddler drinks and baby food are allowed over 3.4 oz (100 ml) and do not need to fit in the quart bag. Tell the officer at the start of screening and take them out of your bag.
- **Shoes:** Children 12 and under can leave their shoes, light jackets and headwear on during screening. If your child goes through the body scanner, light jackets must come off and go on the X-ray belt.
- **PreCheck:** ORF encourages travellers to apply for TSA PreCheck online. TSA sets the rules for children in the PreCheck lane, so check its site before you fly.

## Getting between terminals

Norfolk has a Main Passenger Terminal, with ticketing, the Main Lobby and Concourses A and B, and an Arrivals Terminal with baggage claim, rental cars and rideshare. The Information Center is in the Main Lobby near the pedestrian bridge. Self-serve Smarte Carte luggage carts cost $7, with a $0.25 refund when returned to a rack, and the terminal is open 24 hours.

## Your rights

- **Lactation:** As a medium hub, Norfolk International falls under the FAM Act's requirement for a non-restroom lactation space past security. ORF lists Mother's Rooms near Gate A2 and Gate B19.
- **Changing tables:** ORF says changing tables are in its family restrooms and most other restrooms, and each Mother's Room has one.
- **Liquids:** TSA's national rule applies at Norfolk International: formula, breast milk and baby food are allowed over 3.4 oz (100 ml) and do not need to fit in the quart bag. Declare them at the start of screening.
- **Boarding:** Family boarding is set by your airline, not by Norfolk International. Check your carrier before you fly.
- **If it is missing:** Ask at the Information Center in the Main Lobby near the pedestrian bridge, or ask Airport Police, who are on duty 24 hours. For screening help, contact TSA Cares at least 72 hours before travel.

## FAQ

### Does Norfolk airport have a play area for kids?

Yes. Norfolk International has the KidsPort Play Area in the Main Lobby, before the security checkpoints, where little ones can play and shake out their wiggles while you wait. Because it sits before security, plan to use it before you head to your concourse checkpoint rather than after. ORF doesn't publish separate hours for KidsPort, although the terminal itself is open around the clock. For quieter fun, ask at the Information Center for the airport's aviation-themed coloring and activity book, or download it from ORF's Family Travel page.

### Where are the nursing rooms at ORF?

ORF has three Mother's Rooms. One is in the Main Lobby before security, one is on Concourse A near Gate A2 and one is on Concourse B near Gate B19, so there is a room past the checkpoint whichever concourse your flight uses. The airport says each room has a comfortable chair, a changing table, a small play table for kids, a microwave, wipes, a sink and several outlets, which makes them handy for pumping, warming a bottle or a calm feed before boarding. They are separate from the restrooms.

### Are there family restrooms at Norfolk International?

Yes. ORF lists family restrooms in the Main Lobby, on the airline concourses and in the Arrivals Terminal, where baggage claim is. The Arrivals Terminal family restroom also has an adult changing table, which helps families travelling with an older child who needs one. ORF says changing tables are inside its family restrooms and in most of its other restrooms, and every Mother's Room has one too. Its regular restrooms also have a Step and Wash footstool so small children can reach the sink on their own.

### Does ORF have a sensory room?

Norfolk International's official site doesn't list a sensory room. It does take part in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program: you can request a sunflower lanyard by emailing the airport with your full name, then collect it at the Information Center or have it posted to a US address, allowing up to seven business days plus mail time. Wearing the lanyard quietly tells staff you may need extra help or time, although it doesn't give priority in lines. For checkpoint support, contact TSA Cares at least 72 hours before you fly.

### How does security work at Norfolk airport with kids?

ORF lists its TSA concourse checkpoints as open from 4am to 8:30pm, with hours adjusted to demand, and doesn't publish a dedicated family lane. TSA's national rules apply: children 12 and under can keep their shoes, light jackets and headwear on, strollers and carriers go through the X-ray, and you carry your child through the metal detector. If your child goes through the body scanner, light jackets must come off and go on the X-ray belt. ORF's Family Travel page suggests explaining the steps to children ahead of time so the checkpoint feels less overwhelming, and allowing at least two hours at the airport.

### Can I rent a stroller at Norfolk International?

ORF's official site doesn't mention stroller rental, so bring your own and gate-check it under your airline's rules, which are set by the carrier rather than the airport. Self-serve Smarte Carte luggage carts are outside the ticket counters on both sides of the Main Passenger Terminal, near baggage carousel 2 in the Arrivals Terminal and at rental car return. They cost $7, with a $0.25 refund when you return one to a rack. If you run short of diapers or medicine, ORF's Hudson stores sell them.

### Where can we eat at ORF with kids?

Before security, the Main Lobby has Burger King, a Starbucks that ORF lists as open 24 hours and The Local @ ORF. Past security, Concourse A has Starbucks, Town Center Cold Pressed and High Tide Bar Bites, while Concourse B has Back Bay Bistro, Starbucks and the Fresh Attractions self-serve kiosk, which ORF lists as open around the clock. ORF says many of its restaurants have kids' menus and can offer healthier options on request, and its self-serve kiosks stock fresh fruit and grab-and-go snacks.

### What are the rules for formula and breast milk at ORF security?

TSA's national rules apply at Norfolk International. Formula, breast milk, toddler drinks and baby food, including puree pouches, are allowed in your carry-on in amounts over 3.4 oz (100 ml) and don't need to fit in your quart bag. Tell the officer at the start of screening and take them out of your bag to be screened separately. Ice packs and gel packs are allowed too, and your child doesn't need to be travelling with you for you to carry breast milk. You can ask for private screening at any time.
