# O'Hare Airport (ORD) with Kids: Every Family Facility, Mapped

**Short answer:** Chicago O'Hare has no real children's play structure: Kids on the Fly, the old Chicago Children's Museum exhibit, is permanently closed, and its Terminal 2 space is now the ORD Family Lounge — seating and charging, not play. ## Security with children

- **Family lane:** O'Hare publishes no family security lane. Its Traveling with Children page covers the checkpoint and offers only a link to TSA's tips and videos, and its security page says TSA handles all aspects of the checkpoints. (Midway, the other Chicago airport, does advertise Security Checkpoint Family Lanes — O'Hare does not.)
- **Strollers and car seats:** TSA rules apply: strollers, umbrella strollers, baby carriers, car seats and booster seats must be screened by X-ray, and anything too big for the belt is inspected by hand. Take your child out and carry them through the walk-through metal detector.
- **Formula, milk and baby food:** Formula, breast milk, toddler drinks and baby food including puree pouches are allowed over 3.4 oz (100 ml) and do not need to fit in a quart bag. Your child does not have to be travelling with you to carry breast milk. Declare them at the start of screening and take them out of your bag.
- **Shoes:** Children 12 and under can leave their shoes, light jackets and headwear on during screening.
- **PreCheck:** TSA's own PreCheck page (tsa.gov/precheck) states that children 17 and under can join an enrolled adult in the TSA PreCheck lane for free.

## Getting between terminals

The ATS is a fully automated people mover running every 3–5 minutes during peak hours, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and O'Hare's own connections page calls it free. It links Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 5 with the Multi-Modal Facility over three miles of dual-lane guideway; end to end, Terminal 1 to the MMF takes about 10 minutes. Platforms and cars are ADA compliant, though the accessibility page notes the new trains no longer have designated wheelchair position areas. The Terminal Transfer Bus is the post-security alternative for Terminal 5, every 15 minutes between 11:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m., picking up at Terminal 1 Gate C18B, Terminal 3 Gates G17 and K20, and Terminal 5 Gate M13.

## Layover plans

### 1–2 hours — Skip the play area search, head to the lounge

1. Clear security at whichever T1, T2 or T3 checkpoint is shortest — all three connect on foot after the checkpoint.
2. If you're near Terminal 2, stop at the Family Lounge near Gate F1 for seating, charging and stroller parking.
3. Feed or change at the nearest of O'Hare's ten Mother's Rooms or ten Mamava pods, all free.

### 3–5 hours — There's no play structure, so build the day around the lounge and dining

1. Walk to the Terminal 2 Family Lounge near Gate F1 — reachable from T1 and T3 on foot after security.
2. Use the Companion Plus Restroom across from the lounge if anyone needs an adult changing table.
3. Feed at one of the ten 24/7 Mother's Rooms or a nearby Mamava pod.
4. Eat at CIBO Express (Gate H1) or Burrito Beach (Gate K4), the only two spots O'Hare confirms have a kids' menu.

### Overnight — Mother's Rooms stay open all night; little else does

1. O'Hare's ten Mother's Rooms are open 24/7, so feeding and changing overnight isn't a problem.

3. The ATS runs 24 hours, but confirm your terminal's overnight walking routes before you settle in.

### International connection — Terminal 5 doesn't connect on foot — plan the extra step

1. International arrivals land at Terminal 5, which has no walkway to Terminals 1, 2 or 3.
2. Between 11:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m., the airside Terminal Transfer Bus moves connecting passengers without a re-screen.
3. Outside those hours, or without a same-day boarding pass, you'll need to exit through the landside ATS and clear TSA again.
4. Terminal 5 has its own Mother's Rooms at Gates M8, M20, M32 and M37, so you don't need to reach T2 for the Family Lounge.

## Your rights

- **Lactation:** Under the FAM Act, part of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018, every medium and large hub airport must provide a lactation area in the sterile area of each terminal, with a door that locks, a place to sit, a flat surface, a power outlet and access to a sink or sanitiser, and it must be wheelchair accessible. O'Hare's ten 24/7 Mother's Rooms and ten Mamava pods go well beyond the legal minimum of one per terminal.
- **Changing tables:** The same law requires a baby changing table in at least one men's and one women's restroom in every passenger terminal, with compliance due by 30 September 2020. O'Hare states that changing stations are in most restrooms across the terminals, and every Mother's Room also has its own diaper changing surface.
- **Liquids:** TSA allows formula, breast milk, baby food and baby drinks in quantities over 100 ml, and your child does not need to be travelling with you. Declare them at the start of screening and take them out of your bag for separate inspection; ice packs and gel teethers are allowed too.
- **Boarding:** Priority boarding for families is set by your airline rather than by the airport — check your carrier's policy.
