**Short answer:** SFO is one of the strongest US airports for families: seven Kids' Spots, 21 nursing rooms and 28 companion care restrooms, all mapped to gate numbers. Every Kids' Spot sits past security. A free sensory room with a full-scale aircraft cabin is in Terminal 1 near Gate C2. There is no stroller rental.

## Security with children

- **Family lane:** SFO lists only general, TSA PreCheck, Priority and CLEAR lanes at its checkpoints — there is no dedicated family lane. You can enter through any checkpoint in any terminal and still walk to every gate.
- **Strollers and car seats:** Strollers, umbrella strollers, carriers, car seats and booster seats all go through the X-ray. Anything too large is inspected by hand. Take your child out and carry them through the metal detector — you cannot go through the body scanner holding a child.
- **Formula, milk and baby food:** Formula, breast milk, baby drinks and baby food are allowed over 100 ml and do not go in the quart bag. Your child does not have to be travelling with you to bring breast milk. Declare them at the start of screening and take them out of your bag.
- **Shoes:** Children who appear 12 and under keep their shoes, light jackets and hats on.
- **PreCheck:** Children 17 and under go through the PreCheck lane free with an enrolled adult, without needing their own Known Traveler Number, as long as the adult's boarding pass carries the PreCheck indicator.

## Getting between terminals

AirTrain runs 24 hours a day, year-round, arriving as often as every four minutes, and takes about three minutes between terminals. It is wheelchair accessible with dedicated space at each end of the cars and lifts at every station. Walking takes about six minutes between terminals. Note that SFO's rules list baggage carts, animals and bicycles as permitted on AirTrain but do not mention strollers either way. The Terminal 3 AirTrain station is closed until a new facility opens in 2027 — United passengers should use the Terminal 2 station.

## Layover plans

### 1–2 hours — Move first, play second

1. Clear security at whichever checkpoint is shortest — every checkpoint reaches every gate.
2. Walk to your departure gate and confirm it before stopping anywhere.
3. If you land near one, the closest Kids' Spot to most gates is the Terminal 3 food court one, where you can eat and let them move at the same time.

### 3–5 hours — Enough time for the sensory room

1. Head to Harvey Milk Terminal 1, Level 2 near Gate C2 — reachable from any terminal without leaving the secure area.
2. Use the Cabin Experience mock-up if your child is nervous about the flight ahead.
3. Feed and change at one of the 21 nursing rooms; the gate-adjacent ones are past security.
4. Finish at a Kids' Spot near your departure gate to burn off the last of the energy.

### Overnight — Plan around the sensory room closing at 23:00

1. The sensory room shuts at 11:00 p.m. and is not staffed, so use it before then.
2. AirTrain runs all night but may change routing between 23:00 and 05:00 — leave extra time.
3. Companion care restrooms on arrivals levels stay useful overnight for changing in private.

### International connection — You can walk it

1. From the International Terminal, walk to Terminal 1 (B gates) and Terminal 3 (E and F gates); take AirTrain to Terminal 2.
2. Two nursing rooms sit in International Terminal A near Gates A1/A2 and A3/A4/A5.
3. Adult changing tables are available in International Terminal A near Gate A2 and in Boarding Area G between Gates 2 and 5.

## Your rights

- **Lactation:** Under the FAM Act, part of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018, every medium and large hub airport must provide a lactation area in the sterile area of each terminal. It must have a door that locks, a place to sit, a flat surface, a power outlet, and access to a sink or sanitiser, and it must be wheelchair accessible.
- **Changing tables:** The same law requires a baby changing table in at least one men's and one women's restroom in every passenger terminal. Compliance was due by 30 September 2020.
- **Liquids:** TSA allows formula, breast milk, baby food and baby drinks in quantities over 100 ml. Your child does not need to be with you. Ice packs and gel teethers are allowed whether or not you are carrying milk.
- **Boarding:** Priority boarding for families is set by your airline rather than by the airport — check your carrier's policy.
- **If it is missing:** If you cannot find a lactation room in the secure area of a terminal, ask at any information desk or use an Airport Courtesy Phone — SFO's official instruction is to request access that way. The legal requirement gives you grounds to insist.

### Does San Francisco airport have a kids play area?

Yes — SFO has seven of them, called Kids' Spots, and every single one is located past security so connecting families can use them without leaving the secure area. Two are in Harvey Milk Terminal 1 near Gates B2 and B18, two are in Terminal 2 near Gates D15 and D7, and three are in Terminal 3 near Gates E7, F17 and inside the food court serving Gates F11 through F22. ### Where are the nursing rooms at SFO?

SFO lists 21 nursing locations across all four terminals. Harvey Milk Terminal 1 has five, including one on the arrivals level near Carousel 7. Terminal 2 has seven, two of which sit before security beside baggage carousels 1 and 4. Terminal 3 has five, and the International Terminal has four across the Main Hall and Boarding Areas A and G. Two of the 21 are Mamava pods — one in the International Terminal Main Hall near the G-side checkpoint and one in Terminal 3 near Gate F11 — which you unlock with the free Mamava app. For the rest, SFO's official instruction is to use an Airport Courtesy Phone to request access. SFO does not publish what is inside each room.

### Where can I find a family restroom near baggage claim at SFO?

Five of SFO's 28 companion care restrooms are on arrivals levels beside the carousels, which is unusually well covered — most airports only document the departures side. In Harvey Milk Terminal 1 there is one by Carousel 1 and another by Carousel 7. Terminal 2 has one by Carousel 1 and one by Carousel 4. Terminal 3 has one by Carousel 10. Note a gap in SFO's own documentation: the International Terminal arrivals level is not listed in the main companion care restroom index, even though SFO's adult changing table page refers to a companion care restroom in Boarding Area G between Gates 2 and 5 on the international arrivals level.

### Does SFO have a sensory room?

Yes. SFO's sensory room opened in December 2024 and sits in Harvey Milk Terminal 1 on Level 2, past security near Gate C2. It is open daily from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and is not staffed. Inside there are three zones: a calming area for quiet time, an activity area with both analogue and digital options, and a Cabin Experience — a full-scale aircraft interior mock-up that lets a child practise being on a plane before the real flight. Because all SFO terminals connect after security, you can reach it from any terminal without being re-screened. SFO developed the room with UCSF Children's Hospital and The Arc San Francisco.

### Can I rent a stroller at SFO?

No. SFO offers no stroller rental anywhere on the airport — we checked every service page and the airport's full sitemap, and no such service exists or is documented. What SFO does have is car seat rental: the Airport Travel Agency, with desks in International Terminal Boarding Areas A and G, rents infant and child car seats daily from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and can be reached on 650.821.1322. If you need a stroller for the terminal itself, bring your own and gate-check it. SmartCarte baggage carts cost $9 and are free for arriving international passengers, but they cannot be taken through security.

### Does SFO have a family security lane?

No. SFO's checkpoints list only general lanes, TSA PreCheck, the Priority Line and CLEAR — there is no dedicated family lane. What helps instead is that you can enter through any checkpoint in any terminal and still walk to every gate, so you can pick the shortest queue rather than the one nearest your airline. Standard TSA rules for children still apply: kids who appear 12 and under keep shoes, light jackets and hats on, children are never separated from a parent, and children 17 and under use the PreCheck lane free with an enrolled adult, without needing their own Known Traveler Number. ### How do I get through SFO security with a stroller?

Fold the stroller and put it through the X-ray machine — the same applies to umbrella strollers, carriers, car seats and booster seats. Anything too large for the belt gets inspected by hand instead. You must take your child out and carry them through the metal detector, because you cannot go through the body scanner holding a child; an infant may be carried in a sling or carrier through the metal detector, though this can trigger extra screening. If your child finds the process difficult you can request a private screening. One SFO-specific detail catches families out: baggage carts are not allowed through the checkpoint at all.

### How long does it take to change terminals at SFO with kids?

About three minutes on AirTrain or roughly six minutes on foot. What SFO does document precisely is adult changing tables: there are four, all past security, in Terminal 1 near Gate B13, on the Terminal 1 Level 2 mezzanine for international arrivals, in International Terminal A near Gate A2, and in Boarding Area G between Gates 2 and 5 for international arrivals.

### Which restaurants at SFO have kids' menus or high chairs?

SFO does not publish this information for any of its restaurants. We checked all 184 shop, dine and relax pages on the airport's website and none of them mention a children's menu, a kids' menu or high chairs. The only officially confirmed link between food and families at SFO is the Terminal 3 food court serving Gates F11 through F22, which has a Kids' Spot inside it — so one parent can queue for food while the children play in sight. If a kids' menu matters to you, check the individual restaurant brand's own website before you fly rather than relying on airport pages.

### Is SFO a good airport for families compared to other Bay Area airports?

On documented family facilities, SFO is clearly the strongest of the three Bay Area airports. It publishes seven play areas, 21 nursing locations and 28 companion care restrooms with gate-level detail, plus a sensory room with a full-scale cabin mock-up — a depth of published detail few US airports match, and one reason it was named Best Kid-Friendly US Airport in the Motherhood Loves Community Awards in 2024. Oakland and San Jose are smaller and quicker to move through with children, which can matter more than amenities on a short domestic hop. If your priority is somewhere to feed, change and let children move during a long or international connection, SFO is the better choice.
