Can you bring a car seat on a plane with Lufthansa when traveling with a baby?

Bringing a car seat on Lufthansa

Yes — you can bring a car seat on Lufthansa. You may use a car seat on board only if the child has their own purchased seat. If the child is a lap infant (no separate ticket/seat), the car seat cannot be used in flight but can be transported.

  • Approval: The car seat should be certified for aircraft use — look for a label saying it is suitable for use in motor vehicles and aircraft (e.g., meets ECE R44/04, UN R129 or FMVSS 213 as applicable).
  • Installation: Aircraft seats use the lap belt for installation. ISOFIX anchors are not available on planes, so ensure your seat can be secured with a lap belt.
  • Seating restrictions: Do not use a child restraint in an emergency exit row or where the crew advises otherwise.
  • Transporting the seat: Lufthansa generally allows one car seat (and usually a stroller) free of charge as baby equipment; you can gate-check or check it at the desk.
  • Before travel: Book a separate seat for the child if you plan to use the car seat and notify the airline in advance. Arrive early to allow time for installation and checks.
