Can you bring a toddler bed rail on a plane with United Airlines when traveling with a baby?

Bringing a toddler bed rail on United Airlines

Short answer: Yes — generally you may bring a toddler bed rail, but it must meet carry-on or checked-baggage size rules and cannot be used as an FAA‑approved child restraint on board.

  • Carry-on/checked: If the rail is small or collapsible and fits in the overhead bin or under the seat, it can travel as a carry-on. If it’s bulky, the gate agent may ask you to gate‑check or check it at the ticket counter.
  • Stowage required: For safety, the rail must be stowed during taxi, takeoff and landing as directed by crew.
  • Not a substitute for a car seat: Bed rails are not FAA‑approved child restraints. If your child has their own purchased seat on the plane, use an FAA‑approved car seat or CARES harness where appropriate.
  • Plan ahead: Cabin space varies by aircraft and flight load. Call United before travel if the rail is large or you need confirmation.
