Can you bring baby food pouches on a plane with Japan Airlines when traveling with a baby?

Bringing baby food pouches on Japan Airlines (JAL)

Yes — you can bring baby food pouches on board when traveling with a baby on Japan Airlines. Airlines and airport security recognize that infants need food and fluids during travel, so baby food, purees, formula and breast milk are treated differently from regular liquids. Here’s what to expect and how to make your trip as smooth as possible:

  • Carry-on is best: Keep pouches in your carry-on bag so you can feed the baby during the flight and so items are available if your checked luggage is delayed.
  • Liquid restrictions do not apply the same way: Baby food, milk, formula and breast milk are generally exempt from the 100 ml / 3.4 oz restriction that applies to other passengers’ liquids. Security officers will usually allow reasonable quantities needed for the journey.
  • Declare at security: At the security checkpoint, take the pouches out of your bag and tell the officer they are for an infant. Items will be screened separately. Screening may include X-ray inspection and, in some cases, additional checks such as opening the pouch for inspection.
  • Unopened or opened packs: Both unopened and opened pouches are normally permitted. If an officer needs to test contents, they may ask you to open a pouch.
  • Quantity planning: Bring enough for the flight plus extra for possible delays, connections or unexpected situations. A good rule is to pack more than you think you’ll need.
  • Onboard assistance: Cabin crew generally are happy to help warm food or provide hot water for formula on request, but warming appliances and exact services can vary by flight and aircraft type. Always ask politely and allow time for service.
  • Storage and safety: There’s no guaranteed refrigeration in the cabin. If a pouch needs cooling, use insulated bags or small ice packs — note that these may also be screened at security. For hygiene, bring clean spoons, bibs, and wipes.
  • Checked baggage: You may pack baby food pouches in checked baggage, but it’s safer to keep them in carry-on to avoid spoilage or loss.
  • Customs and import rules: When traveling internationally, be aware some countries have restrictions on bringing in food products. Declare any food items if required by the destination country’s customs rules. If you’re unsure, ask customs officers on arrival.
  • Allergies and special feeds: If your baby needs special medical or allergy-friendly formulas or food, bring enough supply and, if helpful, a doctor’s note for any medical exceptions at security.
  • Connections and transfers: If you have connecting flights, check security rules at the transfer airport too — most airports follow the same infant exemptions, but screening procedures differ slightly by country and airport.

If you want a smooth experience, pack pouches in an easy-to-reach pocket of your carry-on, tell the security officer they are for your baby, and keep extra cleaning supplies and a spare change of clothes handy. The crew on Japan Airlines are generally accommodating to families, and airport security officers are used to screening infant food items.
