Bringing baby formula on American Airlines

Yes — you can bring formula when flying with a baby. Follow TSA screening rules and airline best practices to avoid delays and make the trip easier.

  • Carry-on recommended: Keep formula, breast milk, and baby food in carry-on bags for easy access during the flight.
  • Liquid limit exception: Formula, breast milk, and juice are allowed in quantities greater than 3.4 oz / 100 mL. Tell the TSA officer at the security checkpoint that you have these items for inspection.
  • Screening: Items will be inspected and may be tested separately. Bottles may be opened for inspection; allow time for additional screening.
  • Ice/gel packs: Frozen items that are completely frozen at screening are generally allowed. Partly thawed gel/ice packs may be subject to additional screening.
  • Onboard: Flight attendants often can provide warm water to mix or warm formula, but it’s not guaranteed — bring a thermos of hot water if you need a specific temperature.
  • International travel: Follow destination customs rules and declare dairy/food items if required.
