Can you bring a car seat on a plane with United Airlines when traveling with a baby?

Bringing a car seat on United Airlines

Yes. You may bring a car seat (child restraint system) on United. To use a car seat onboard, the child must have their own purchased ticket and seat — lap infants cannot use a car seat unless you buy a seat for them.

  • FAA‑approved only: The car seat must have the FAA certification label (wording such as "This restraint is certificated for use in motor vehicles and aircraft").
  • Installation: Install the car seat using the aircraft lap belt and the car seat manufacturer’s aircraft‑installation instructions. Some rear‑facing seats can fit; verify fit before boarding.
  • Seat location limits: Car seats are not allowed in exit rows and may not fit in some bulkhead or narrow seats — check fit at the gate if possible.
  • Gate check and checked baggage: United typically allows car seats to be gate‑checked free of charge or checked with your baggage. If you gate‑check, you can bring it to the aircraft door and retrieve it at the jet bridge or baggage claim per airline procedure.
  • Booster seats: Many boosters are not FAA‑approved for aircraft use because the cabin provides only a lap belt; only use boosters that are explicitly certified for aircraft.

Tip: Arrive early, bring the car seat manual, and confirm specifics with United if you have a large or unusual seat to ensure proper fit and handling.
