Can you bring a portable crib on a plane with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines when traveling with a baby?

Bringing a portable crib on KLM

Short answer: Yes—you can bring a portable travel crib, but KLM usually treats it as extra/checked baggage. A bassinet (airline-provided) is available on selected long-haul aircraft and must be reserved in advance.

  • Checked vs cabin: Most portable cribs or travel cots are too large for the cabin and should be checked at the gate or ticket desk. If your travel crib meets carry-on dimensions and weight allowed for your ticket, you might bring it into the cabin, but that’s uncommon.
  • Bassinet option: KLM provides bassinets on certain long-haul aircraft for small infants—they have weight and length limits and are limited in number. Book the bassinet seat as early as possible through KLM or your travel agent.
  • Car seats and restraints: A portable crib cannot be used as an aircraft seat. If you want a secure seat for your baby, bring an approved child restraint (car seat) and buy a separate ticket for the child. Car seats must meet aviation safety standards.
  • Free carriage: KLM generally allows one stroller and/or one car seat per infant free of charge. Policies for travel cots vary by route and fare—confirm with KLM before travel.
  • Security and handling: Portable cribs may be subject to inspection and should be clean and collapsed if required. Pack any detachable padding/mattress separately if possible to avoid damage.
  • Best practice: Contact KLM customer service with your booking reference before travel to confirm whether your specific portable crib is allowed, whether it will be checked or carried, and to reserve a bassinet if needed.
