Bringing a bassinet on a Spirit Airlines flight

Most airlines — and U.S. aviation rules — treat bassinets as comfort items, not safety devices. Here’s what to know and do:

  • Check with Spirit before you travel. Airline policies and available seats (bulkhead space) vary by aircraft and route.
  • FAA rule: only FAA‑approved child restraint systems (car seats) may be used as the child’s safety device during taxi, takeoff and landing. Portable travel bassinets generally are not FAA‑approved as restraints.
  • If you want an actual restraint, purchase a seat for your child and bring an FAA‑approved car seat that fits on the airplane seat.
  • Some soft travel bassinets can be carried onboard or gate‑checked if they meet Spirit’s size and carry/checked baggage rules — but they cannot replace a certified car seat for safety-critical phases of flight.
  • Practical steps: call Spirit Reservations or check your confirmation, confirm bulkhead availability, ask about carry‑on counting/fees, and, if using a car seat, ensure it’s labeled for aircraft use.
