Can you bring a changing pad on a plane with Southwest Airlines when traveling with a baby?

Bringing a Changing Pad on Southwest Airlines

You can bring a changing pad on a Southwest Airlines flight when traveling with a baby. Changing pads (foldable, foam, plastic, or disposable liners) are allowed in both carry-on and checked baggage, and they are commonly packed inside a diaper bag or travel changing kit.

  • Carry-on and personal item allowance: A changing pad carried inside your diaper bag or personal item is treated like any other baby essential and will not normally be considered an extra bag. Make sure the diaper bag or personal item still fits within Southwest’s normal carry-on/personal item rules.
  • TSA screening: Changing pads do not fall under liquid restrictions and are allowed through security. If your pad is bulky, place it in a bin for X-ray screening. Disposable pads or thin mats usually go through with no special handling.
  • During taxi, takeoff and landing: All carry-on items must be stowed under the seat or in an overhead bin during taxi, takeoff and landing. If the changing pad is in your diaper bag, keep that bag stowed as required. Small, foldable pads that fit in the diaper bag are easiest to manage.
  • If the pad is large or bulky: If you travel with a very large, non-folding pad, it may be treated like any other oversized carry-on. If it won’t fit in the overhead or under the seat, you may be asked to check it at the gate. Southwest does not normally charge extra for gate-checking strollers or car seats; changing pads gate-checked with your carry-on may be subject to standard handling.
  • In-flight changing: Most aircraft lavatories on short- and medium-haul flights have a baby changing table. Ask a flight attendant for assistance and to confirm it’s safe to use. If you need a clean surface, your compact changing pad is useful for airplane lavatory or for changing on your lap if appropriate.
  • International travel considerations: Rules about what you can carry on are generally similar, but if you’re traveling internationally check destination-specific rules or airline guidance for any additional restrictions.

Practical tips:

  • Pack a compact, foldable changing pad inside your diaper bag so it counts as your personal item and is easy to stow.
  • Bring extra disposable liners or wipes; disposable pads are convenient for quick changes and disposal.
  • If you expect needing a lot of baby gear, arrive early at the gate and ask staff about gate-checking options for bulky items.
  • Keep essential baby items (diapers, wipes, a spare outfit, the changing pad) in the bag you can access during the flight—flight attendants can help if you need assistance or space.

In short: yes — you can bring a changing pad on Southwest. Carry it in your diaper bag or carry-on, follow normal stowage rules during takeoff/landing, and ask cabin crew for help if you need to use the lavatory changing table or gate-check a bulky item.
