Velivolo Travel Score
17.75 in wide — fits most US economy cabins, rear-facing recline may be tight in some aircraft rows with smaller seat pitches.
Velivolo encourages all children to use their car seat onboard the aircraft. If gate-checking is necessary, its recommended to use a secure and padded bag or box to reduce the risk for potential damage during baggage handling.
Not as quick as other seats, but the clear rear and forward facing belt paths make installation straightforward.
Velivolo Score
FAA accepted at 17.75 in wide — fits most US economy seats. With a back to front depth of 26.5 the recline angle may present a problem in some aircraft rows with small seat pitch.
Install using either the LATCH (up to 55lbs in forward-facing mode) or the Vehicle Seatbelt.

Best For
Families who want a travel seat from birth
The Trooper 3-in-1 can be used from birth (4lbs) and continue rear-facing until 40lbs.
Families who fly occasionally and drive daily on a tight budget
At $120 the Trooper costs less than many car-seat gate-check bags, yet it is FAA accepted and works in rental cars, grandparent vehicles, and rideshares from day one through the booster years.
Parents traveling with multiple kids and need 3-across
At 17.75 inches wide, this seat can help accommodate three across in many rental cars and rideshares.
Key Features
FAA Accepted for Aircraft Use
The Trooper 3-in-1 carries the required FMVSS 213 red-letter FAA certification sticker. In both rear-facing and forward-facing harness modes the seat installs on the aircraft using only the airplane lap belt.
Slim Convertible Profile
The Trooper 3-in-1 measures 17.75 inches at its widest point, meaning it fits the full width of most US economy airline configurations. The slim profile also benefits vehicle three-across configurations in minivans and large SUVs in forward-facing harness mode. In rental cars with narrow rear seats the Trooper's footprint is more accommodating than wider all-in-one competitors at this lifecycle range.
Real-World Scenarios
Economy flight with a 3-month-old on a purchased seat (rear-facing harness)
FAA accepted rear-facing from 4 lbs. Lap-belt install on the aircraft seat. At 10.5 lbs it is manageable on the jet bridge but does not fold — gate-check bag required.
Economy flight with a 2-year-old in forward-facing harness mode
FAA accepted FF harness. Install takes 2 minutes with the lap belt. Route aircraft lapbelt through forward-facing belt path and fasten to the other side. Pull Excess webbing to tighten. Watch Velivolo Aircraft Installation video for further instructions.
Destination rental car install upon landing
LATCH or belt install works in most rental vehicles. Not great with non-removable headrests in the forward-facing position. Confirm your rental vehicle headrests may be removed if necessary. Locate the top tether anchor in the vehicle and use for every ride.

Reserve a Window Seat at Time of Booking
Car Seats should be installed in the window seat, although other locations may be permitted depending on aircraft configuration. Reserve a window seat at the time of booking to avoid potential disruption.
Tighten the Aircraft Lap Belt
The aircraft lap belt must be routed through the appropriate belt path and securely fastened. Once fastened, pull on the excess webbing to tighten. The car seat should move no more than one inch in either direction.
Locate the FAA-acceptance label
Locate the FAA-acceptance label on the car seat shell before you fly. You may need to show this approval label to a gate agent or cabin crew member before using onboard. Watch the Velivolo Aircraft Installation video to find exact label location.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Baby Trend Trooper 3-in-1 FAA accepted for use on airplanes?
Thee Trooper 3-in-1 is FAA accepted for aircraft use in both rear-facing harness mode (4–40 lbs) and forward-facing harness mode (22–65 lbs). The FAA certification sticker, which reads 'This Restraint is Certified for Use in Motor Vehicles and Aircraft,' is located on the side of the seat shell. On the aircraft, the seat installs using only the airplane lap belt.
Will the Baby Trend Trooper fit in a standard airplane economy seat?
The Trooper 3-in-1 measures 17.75 inches at its widest point. This fits A320/A321 Main Cabin seats (17.75 in), Southwest 737 MAX 8 (17.8 in), and JetBlue A321 (17.8 in) Delta A321neo (17.2 in) American Airlines 737 Main Cabin (16.7 in) with center seat armrest raised. Per FAA AC 120-87C and airline policy, armrests may be raised to accommodate an FAA accepted car seat. Watch the Velivolo Installation video for instructions.
Can the Baby Trend Trooper be used rear-facing with a newborn on a plane?
The Trooper 3-in-1 fits children starting at 4 lbs in rear-facing harness mode, so long as a safe harness fit can be achieved. To use it rear-facing on an aircraft, the child must have a purchased seat (children under 2 may fly on a parent's lap, but Velivolo CPSTs strongly recommends a purchased seat and FAA accepted restraint for infants). The seat installs rear-facing with the aircraft lap belt routed through the rear-facing belt path. On smaller regional jets, and aircrafts with smaller seat pitch and seat depth between rows, it may be challenging to achieve the correct recline position per the manufacturer.
How does the Baby Trend Trooper 3-in-1 compare to the Graco Contender Slim for travel?
Both are FAA accepted convertibles at similar price points, but they differ significantly in weight and cabin fit. The Trooper weighs 10.3 lbs and measures 17.75 in wide, while the Graco Contender Slim weighs approximately 16 lbs and measures approximately 18 in wide. For air travel, the Trooper's lighter weight and narrower width are significant advantages. The Contender Slim features a closed forward-facing belt path which keeps the aircraft lapbelt buckle off of the child's back, however it's more frustrating to release upon deboarding. The Baby Trend Trooper may be more difficult to achieve a safe fit for newborns. The Graco Contender Slim is roughly $80 more expensive than the Baby Trend Trooper.
What is the expiration date on the Baby Trend Trooper 3-in-1?
Baby Trend convertible car seats typically expire 6 years from the date of manufacture. The date of manufacture is printed on a label on the side or bottom of the seat shell.
How should I gate-check the Baby Trend Trooper when flying?
If necessary, gate-check the Trooper in a secure and padded bag or box. Velivolo encourages all children to use their car seat onboard the aircraft.
