Getting Through Reno-Tahoe Security With Kids

Family lane

RNO publishes no family security lane. There's one TSA checkpoint, on the first floor, which opens an hour to 90 minutes before the first departure, typically around 4am; the terminal itself is open 24 hours. TSA at RNO uses credential authentication technology, so boarding passes may not be needed at the checkpoint. RNO notes that infant and child nourishments are exempt from the 3-1-1 rule. Sunflower lanyards are available at airline ticket counters or RNO's Information Hub.

Strollers and car seats

Strollers, baby carriers and car seats go through the X-ray, and anything too large is inspected by hand. Take your child out and carry them through the walk-through metal detector.

Formula, milk and baby food

Formula, breast milk and baby food are allowed over 3.4 oz (100 ml) and do not need to fit in the quart bag. Tell the officer at the start of screening and take them out of your bag.

Shoes and jackets

Children 12 and under can leave their shoes, light jackets and headwear on during screening.

TSA PreCheck with kids

Children 12 and under can use the TSA PreCheck lane with an enrolled parent or guardian. Teens 13 to 17 on the same reservation can too, if the PreCheck indicator appears on their boarding pass.

Questions

Reno-Tahoe With Kids: Common Questions

RNO's amenities and accessibility pages don't list one. What it does have is the Paws4Passengers programme, with more than 30 therapy dog teams that visit the terminal, which kids tend to love. Keep in mind animals shouldn't come within 10 feet of the therapy dogs.

Reno-Tahoe has two Mamava XL lactation pods, both past security: near Gate B1 on Concourse B, and just past Subway on Concourse C. They're roomy enough for a stroller or wheelchair and have a place to plug in a pump. Use the Mamava app to unlock them, reserve ahead, or adjust the lighting and airflow.

Yes, three, all stroller and wheelchair accessible with changing tables. One is before security in the main lobby near the PGA Tour Golf Shop, and there's one past security on each of Concourses B and C.

RNO's site doesn't list one. It takes part in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower programme: ask your airline's ticket counter or RNO's Information Hub for a lanyard or wristband. Paws4Passengers therapy dogs also help ease travel anxiety.

RNO's single TSA checkpoint, on the first floor, opens an hour to 90 minutes before the first departure, usually around 4am. The terminal is open 24 hours.

RNO doesn't mention stroller rental. Smarte Carte luggage carts cost $7 but aren't allowed past security. Bring your own stroller and gate-check it under your airline's rules.

Yes. Both concourses are behind the same first-floor checkpoint, and the High Mountain Marketplace on the second floor connects them, so you can use the pod or family restroom on either concourse.

RNO notes that infant and child nourishments are exempt from TSA's 3-1-1 liquids rule. Formula, breast milk and baby food can go in your carry-on over 3.4 oz; tell the officer at the start of screening and take them out of your bag.
