Stokke Xplory X Review

Stokke Xplory X is the only stroller in the entire market with a height-adjustable seat that raises the child to restaurant table height — 23 inches above the frame — eliminating the need for a high chair at restaurants. This signature parent-baby proximity philosophy has no competitor equivalent. At 29.5 lbs with a 41.3" folded length (the largest in the premium cluster), the Xplory X trades travel-friendliness for a unique daily dining and social interaction experience. MSRP $1,099–$1,399 Signature.

Travel Score — How Airplane-Friendly Is the Xplory X?

2
Travel Score
Home Base
Fold Size
2/10

41.3" x 20.1" x 18.7" folded (254L) — the largest folded volume in the premium full-size cluster. The 41.3" length is the dominant constraint: few rental car trunks accommodate it with luggage.

Weight
2/10

29.5 lbs is the heaviest stroller in the premium sub-cluster alongside the Joolz Day+. BabyGearLab's older Xplory scored 4/10 on weight/fold — the same constraint applies to the current Xplory X.

Airport Navigation
5/10

Foam-filled wheels handle terminal tile adequately. 2-wheel mode can assist with curbs. The narrow 20.1" width is one of the slimmest in class — fits jet bridge widths with room to spare.

Setup Speed
4/10

The fold requires removing the seat or carry cot first — it does NOT fold with seat attached. This adds 60–90 seconds at the jet bridge compared to strollers that fold in place.

Airline Compliance
7/10

ASTM F833-21 compliant. Stokke is JPMA/BSA certified. No Xplory-specific recalls identified. Accepted gate-check free on all major US carriers despite the large fold dimensions.

Gate Check & Airline Info

Fits in overhead bin
Fits in gate check bag

Gate-checked free on all major US carriers. At 29.5 lbs, it is within US airline gate-check weight limits. However, the 41.3" folded length is the longest in the premium full-size category — standard gate-check bags (designed for 33" strollers) will not fit without a custom bag. The fold does NOT self-stand with the seat attached, requiring you to lean it against a wall at the jet bridge. For travel, the carry cot or seat must be removed before folding, adding complexity.

  • Narrowest wheelbase in premium class at 20.1" — fits the tightest café doorways
  • 5 seating positions including 3 parent-proximity heights plus 2 forward-facing levels

  • Resale holds at 45–60% at one year, despite polarizing design
Cons
  • 41.3" folded length — longest in the premium cluster; will not fit in most sedan trunks
  • 29.5 lbs — heaviest in the premium sub-cluster alongside Joolz Day+
  • Does NOT fold with seat attached — must remove seat before folding (adds gate-check complexity)
  • Carry cot sold separately — adds $200–$300 for newborn flat-sleep capability
  • BabyGearLab older Xplory rated weight/fold 4/10 — the travel/storage limitation is well-documented
  • 11 lb basket is among the smallest in premium class

Who Should Buy the Stokke Xplory X?

Restaurant-loving urban parents

The height-adjustable seat raising the child to table height is the Xplory X's defining feature. At restaurants, cafés, and dinner tables, the child sits at adult eye level without a separate high chair — a convenience no other stroller provides.

Parents who prioritize eye contact and proximity

Stokke's design philosophy centers on parent-baby eye contact during walks. Five seat heights let you keep the child at face level regardless of whether you're pushing at normal walking height or seated at a table.

Families with SUVs who don't need frequent trunk loading

The Xplory X's 41.3" fold fits in most SUV cargo areas (RAV4, CR-V, Tucson) with the seats folded. If you have dedicated storage at home and primarily drive an SUV, the fold constraint is manageable.

Design-first buyers with distinct aesthetic taste

The Xplory X's upright silhouette and multi-height seat are visually unique — recognizable immediately as Stokke. For parents who want a stroller that makes a design statement, the Xplory X has a visual identity no competitor matches.

Key Features — What Makes the Xplory X Stand Out

1

Height-Adjustable Seat to Table Height

The Xplory X seat adjusts across 5 positions, with the highest position raising the child 23 inches above the frame — at adult table height. This allows the stroller to double as a restaurant high chair: the child sits at the same level as adults at a restaurant table without a chair transfer. No other stroller on the market offers this capability at any price point.

Seat raises to table height — replaces restaurant high chair. No other stroller does this.
2

Narrowest Premium Wheelbase

At 20.1" wheelbase, the Xplory X is the narrowest full-size premium stroller in this cluster — 3.5" narrower than the Bugaboo Fox 5 (23.6") and 4.3" narrower than the UPPAbaby Vista V3. This narrow profile allows it to fit through the tightest café doorways and navigate crowded markets where wider strollers drag against displays.

20.1" wheelbase — narrowest in the premium class, fits where wider strollers cannot.
3

2-Wheel Mode

The Xplory X's front wheels can be lifted into a 2-wheel mode where the stroller balances on the rear wheels only. This mode allows tight 180-degree turns in cramped spaces and aids in curb transitions. The mode is initiated with a foot lever and provides a different handling experience than 4-wheel mode for navigating narrow restaurant aisles.

2-wheel mode enables tight turns in cramped restaurant and café spaces.
4

Puncture-Proof Suspension Wheels

Foam-filled puncture-resistant wheels with built-in suspension handle urban surfaces without maintenance. The front wheels swivel for maneuverability and lock for straight-line stability. The suspension is tuned for the Xplory X's elevated seat height, maintaining stability even with the seat in the highest position.

Built-in suspension at all heights — maintains stability even with seat at maximum restaurant height.

Real-World Performance

City sidewalks

Competent on urban surfaces. The narrow 20.1" wheelbase is a genuine advantage on crowded sidewalks. Suspension handles pavement variation. The large fold limits spontaneous storage, so plan ahead.

Airport travel

Challenging. Heaviest stroller in the premium cluster (29.5 lbs), longest fold (41.3"), and requires seat removal before folding. Not recommended for frequent air travel. Use a lighter companion stroller for flights.

Public transit

Difficult for buses and impractical for subway. The 41.3" fold length and 29.5 lbs make one-person subway navigation particularly hard. The narrow 20.1" width helps on buses, but the fold size offsets it.

Restaurant dining

Exceptional — this is the Xplory X's defining scenario. Raise the seat to table height, and the child participates in meals alongside adults without a high chair transfer. Narrow wheelbase fits standard restaurant table spacing.

Grocery shopping

Manageable in large stores. Narrow wheelbase helps in tight aisles. Small basket (11 lbs) limits carry capacity. The fold size makes trunk loading after grocery runs a consistent friction point.

Road trips

Not recommended as a road trip stroller. The 41.3" fold will not fit in sedan trunks alongside luggage. SUV cargo areas can accommodate it with rear seats folded, but this eliminates passenger capacity.

How the Xplory X Compares

Cybex Priam 4
$1,299
One-pull harness, e-Priam electric upgrade, slightly more compact fold

Both are luxury European strollers in the same weight class (~29 lbs). Priam 4 has the unique one-pull harness tightening and e-Priam electric upgrade path. Xplory X has the unique height-adjustable seat. Priam folds to 37.4" vs Xplory's 41.3" — both are large but Priam is slightly more manageable for car trunks.

Bugaboo Fox 5
$1,299–$1,499
Lighter weight (22 lbs), compact fold (152L), all-terrain wheels, included bassinet

Fox 5 is significantly lighter (22 vs 29.5 lbs), has XL all-terrain wheels, folds to 152L (vs 254L), and includes the bassinet. Xplory X has the height-adjustable seat and narrower wheelbase (20.1" vs 23.6"). For most families, Fox 5 wins on practicality; Xplory X wins for the restaurant-height seat use case specifically.

Joolz Day+
$1,099
Bassinet included, 10-year warranty, more compact fold (124L)

Both are premium European strollers in the ~29.5 lb weight class. Joolz Day+ includes bassinet AND toddler seat in the box and has a 10-year warranty. Xplory X has the height-adjustable seat. Day+ folds more compactly (124L without seat vs 254L for Xplory). Day+ wins on total value; Xplory X wins for height-adjustment fans.

iCandy Peach 7
$1,449
5-year warranty, compact fold (124L), double conversion, US availability

iCandy Peach 7 also offers a raised seat via elevator adapters and converts to a double stroller — features the Xplory X lacks. Peach 7 folds to 124L (vs 254L), is lighter, and has a 5-year warranty. Xplory X has the full height-adjustment range; Peach 7 wins on nearly every other metric.

Velivolo Travel Tips

Airport & Travel Tips for the Xplory X

Remove the seat before gate-checking the Xplory X

Unlike self-folding strollers, the Xplory X requires removing the seat before the chassis folds. Practice this at home — the seat detaches in about 15 seconds. Carry the seat and frame separately to the gate agent and re-attach after deplaning. This is mandatory — the fold does NOT self-stand with the seat attached.

The 41-inch fold requires a custom gate-check bag

Standard stroller gate-check bags (designed for 33" strollers) will not fit the Xplory X's 41.3" fold. Purchase Stokke's dedicated travel bag, or confirm your bag's length specification (need 42" minimum) before your first flight.

Two-stroller strategy: Xplory X for daily, compact stroller for flights

Most Xplory X families keep a lightweight travel stroller (Babyzen YOYO3 at $599, UPPAbaby Minu V3 at $449) for air travel. The Xplory X's height-adjustment and restaurant versatility make it the ideal daily driver; the lightweight stroller handles airports and long travel days. This is the most practical approach for Xplory X owners who fly more than twice a year.

Delta and Southwest have no weight limit for the Xplory X

At 29.5 lbs, the Xplory X is accepted free at gate check on Delta (no weight limit for collapsible strollers) and Southwest (all types accepted). American Airlines removed its 20-lb cap in 2024. The limitation is practical — fold complexity and carry difficulty — not airline policy.

Carry cot for hotel travel: plan for separate bag

If using the Stokke carry cot at a hotel or relatives' home, transport it in a separate soft bag — it will not fit inside the stroller gate-check bag alongside the frame. The carry cot adds 3–4 lbs to your carry load.

Safety & Certifications

Certifications

ASTM F833-21CPSC 16 CFR Part 1227EN 1888:2018+A1:2022JPMA Certified

Recalls: No Xplory X-specific CPSC recalls identified as of April 2026. Stokke's US recall history includes an August 2020 Thule Sleek handlebar recall — note that this was a Thule-branded model, not a Stokke-branded stroller. BabyGearLab's older Xplory scored Quality 8/10, confirming the build integrity of the platform.

Safety Features

  • 5-point one-hand quick-release harness with height-specific tension adjustment
  • Foot-operated parking brake with multiple locking positions
  • Height-adjustment lock at each position prevents mid-adjustment seat drop
  • Anti-fold chassis lock prevents accidental collapse while occupied
  • Suspension-stabilized seat maintains balance at maximum raised height

Frequently Asked Questions

For families who eat out frequently with young children, the height-adjustable seat is genuinely valuable — it eliminates the need to carry a portable high chair or wait for restaurant staff to find one. No other stroller provides this capability. At $1,099–$1,399, it is priced similarly to competitors but delivers a fundamentally different use case. The trade-off is significant: 29.5 lbs, a 41.3" fold, and no bassinet included make it among the least practical strollers for air travel in this cluster. BabyGearLab's older Xplory scored Quality 8/10 but Weight/Fold 4/10 — the same trade-off applies to the current Xplory X.

The Stokke Xplory X can be gate-checked free on all major US airlines. However, it is among the least practical full-size strollers for air travel in its cluster. The 41.3" folded length requires a custom gate-check bag (standard bags won't fit), the seat must be removed before folding, and the 29.5 lbs combined weight makes one-person airport transit physically demanding. Most Xplory X owners invest in a separate travel stroller (Babyzen YOYO3 or UPPAbaby Minu V3) for flights. If you must fly with the Xplory X, bring two adults to the airport and plan for a 2-minute gate-check process.

No, the Stokke Xplory X does not include a bassinet in the base purchase. The carry cot (bassinet equivalent) is sold separately. For newborn use, you need either the Stokke carry cot or a compatible infant car seat (Stokke PIPA by Nuna or BeSafe iZi Go/Sleep X3 integrate without adapters). The absence of an included bassinet adds $200–$300 to the total cost for newborn-ready use, which is a meaningful gap compared to Bugaboo Fox 5 and Joolz Day+ (both include bassinets in the base price).

The Xplory X seat slides vertically along the upright chassis post, adjusting to five heights. The lowest position places the child at standard stroller seat height; the highest raises the child 23 inches above the frame, bringing them to adult table level. The seat locks securely at each position and the 5-point harness provides the same protection at all heights. To switch heights, release the adjustment lever and slide the seat to the desired position. The height range covers from below-hip level to above-table level, allowing a genuinely novel 'sit at the table with us' positioning that parents who use it consistently describe as transformative for family dining.

The Stokke PIPA by Nuna infant car seat and BeSafe iZi Go Modular X3 and iZi Sleep X3 attach directly to the Xplory X frame without adapters — they are designed as a co-branded system. For other infant car seat brands, Stokke sells adapters for Maxi-Cosi Mico series, Nuna PIPA series (additional adapter), Cybex infant seats, and Peg Perego Primo Viaggio series. Adapters are purchased from Stokke's accessories store and are not included in the base stroller purchase.
