San Juan Airport (SJU) with Kids: What Families Should Know

The short answer

San Juan's Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport publishes almost nothing for families: its official services page lists no nursing room, children's play area, family restroom, sensory room, family lane or stroller rental. Every bag heading to the US mainland goes through a USDA inspection at the terminal entrance first.

SJU is Puerto Rico's main gateway, but its official site is thin on family information. The services page covers customs, the USDA agricultural inspection, TSA, banks, lounges and a 24-hour baggage porter service, but lists no nursing room, play area or family restroom. What matters most for families flying to the mainland: every bag passes a USDA inspection at the terminal entrance, so arrive two hours ahead and know which foods you can't take.

  • SJU's official services page lists no nursing room, children's play area or family restroom.
  • All bags flying from Puerto Rico to the US mainland are inspected by USDA officers at the entrance to each SJU terminal.
  • SJU recommends arriving at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international ones.
  • A free baggage porter service runs 24/7 at every SJU terminal entrance and in baggage claim (suggested tip $2 per bag).
  • SJU is open 24 hours, and baggage storage is available through the airport's baggage cooperative.

Security

Getting Through SJU Security With Kids

Family lane

SJU publishes no family security lane. Before you reach TSA, every bag going from Puerto Rico to the US mainland is inspected by USDA officers at the entrance to each terminal, and items such as fresh fruit, pork products like pasteles and plants with soil aren't allowed. SJU notes that milk, formula and baby food are exempt from the 3-1-1 liquids rule; tell the officer if you're carrying them. Arrive at least two hours before a domestic flight.

Strollers and car seats

Strollers, baby carriers and car seats go through the X-ray, and anything too large is inspected by hand. Take your child out and carry them through the walk-through metal detector.

Formula, milk and baby food

Formula, breast milk and baby food are allowed over 3.4 oz (100 ml) and do not need to fit in the quart bag. Tell the officer at the start of screening and take them out of your bag.

Shoes and jackets

Children 12 and under can leave their shoes, light jackets and headwear on during screening.

TSA PreCheck with kids

Children 12 and under can use the TSA PreCheck lane with an enrolled parent or guardian. Teens 13 to 17 on the same reservation can too, if the PreCheck indicator appears on their boarding pass.

Know your rights

What SJU Owes Your Family by Law

Lactation rooms

As a large US hub, SJU falls under the FAM Act's requirement for a non-restroom lactation space past security in each terminal. Its official site doesn't list where these are, so ask staff.

Changing tables

SJU doesn't publish where its changing tables are.

Milk and formula

TSA's national rule applies at SJU: formula, breast milk and baby food are allowed over 3.4 oz (100 ml) and do not need to fit in the quart bag. Declare them at the start of screening.

Boarding

Family boarding is set by your airline, not by SJU. Check your carrier before you fly.

If the facility is not there

Ask at the information desk on the second level of Terminal B (787-289-7240). For screening help, contact TSA Cares 72 hours ahead.

Questions

SJU With Kids: Common Questions

SJU's official services page doesn't list one. The airport doesn't say none exists, so treat it as unconfirmed and pack activities for the wait.

SJU's official site doesn't list a nursing or lactation room. As a large US hub, it's covered by the FAM Act's requirement for a non-restroom lactation space past security in each terminal, so ask at the Terminal B information desk where to find one.

Every bag flying from Puerto Rico to the US mainland is inspected by USDA officers at the entrance to each terminal. Some foods are allowed after inspection, like avocados, citrus, strawberries and pineapple, but fresh fruit in general, pork products such as pasteles, palm-leaf crafts and plants with soil are not. Build in time for it with kids.

SJU's official site doesn't mention family or companion restrooms, or where changing tables are. Ask at the information desk.

SJU notes that children under 18 usually don't need photo ID for domestic flights, but each airline has its own rules, so check with yours. US citizens flying between Puerto Rico and the mainland don't need a passport.

SJU recommends at least two hours before a domestic (US) flight and three hours before an international one. With the USDA bag inspection and children, aim for the earlier end.

SJU doesn't mention stroller rental. A free porter service runs 24/7 at every terminal entrance and in baggage claim, with a suggested tip of $2 per bag, which helps when you're juggling kids and luggage.

SJU notes that milk, formula, baby food and medicine are exempt from the 3-1-1 liquids rule. Tell the security officer you have them and take them out of your bag. You can carry your child through the walk-through metal detector.
